Burlington Hotel – New St – The Burlington hotel sets itself up a a good four star hotel and initial impression with the setting, reception and general front of house being very nice. The rooms however are large, but a bit tired – the decor is more like a lesser hotel, but the beds are comfy! Don’t book unless you get a good deal – there are better places nearby otherwise.

Bacchus Bar – underneath the Burlington hotel off New St. Really good and comfortable bar. Suits of armour, high backed chairs, good beer. Will be back soon! A hidden gem – try it!

San Carlo Temple St – Possibly, or arguably the best restaurant in Birmingham. There might be better, but I haven’t been there. The staff are genuine, friendly, accommodative and the food is nothing short of fabulous.
I did used to go to San Lorenzo in Knightbridge – in my humble opinion (but I have spent quite a while in Tuscany & Rome) the best food I have had outside Italy.
The atmosphere is quiet at lunchtime, but noisy and crazy in the evenings. Try to sit upstairs – its better. Try the Beef medallions in truffle sauce, but don’t order a ton of side dishes – its very filling! The wines are good but not great, if you are a buff try elsewhere – for example the Hotel du Vin just the other side of the square. (I have yet to eat at the Hotel du Vin so I’m prepared to be amazed)
